Backstage with Bling - Love & Taco Tuesday's with Rod Williams & Shelley Mac!

Blog written By Bling Johnson 1/24/2012 - Follow Bling on Twitter @BlingJohnson

Who doesn't like Taco Tuesday's during the summer at Carlos-n-Charlies on Lake Travis? Ok, maybe it's not an official weekly event, but for a few of us it was a night we would get together at the Lake, have a few margaritas and enjoy hanging out with great friends. Once we made it to the second round of drinks inevitably the ideas would start flowing.

Many of these nights included my good friend and musician Rod Williams. Rod and I met a while back, he's been on the tv show and we share many similarities. We both have business backgrounds, we are both pursuing our dreams and he's one of the most handsome men I have ever met outside of Fabio!

I can't tell you how many nights we spent out at the lake talking about ways to improve ourselves, my show, his music and many other areas of our lives. He'd share a new song or talk about his experiences on the road with some of the biggest names in music. With many of the personal challenges I was going through at the time with my kids being in Florida and a pending divorce, these nights were the highlight of my week because they were real, I could be myself and just chill with people that cared about me.

One night I rode the Harley out to the lake for my weekly summer night out. This Tuesday night Rod had a hot little blonde with him that had an accent. He introduced me to his new "friend" Shelley Mac. Now as good lookin as Rod is, Shelley was a clear 2-3 steps above his pay grade if you know what I mean. She has a welcoming personality and makes you feel like you've known her your whole life. Shelley was as down to earth as they come and we all had a great time getting to know her.

Little did I know Shelley was a big deal back in her homeland of New Zealand. When I got home I looked her up online and found that she had just come off of a successful run as one half of the female vocal duo, Pearl. With her melodic voice and skills on the guitar they played for huge crowds of 60,000+ and shared the stage with the likes of Eric Clapton and Elton John!

Unbeknownst to me, Shelley and Rod started doing much more than just playing songs with each other. Their relationship continued to grow, but not without it's share of challenges, yet these challenges drew them closer together. Think about that for a second. How many times does a rough patch in a relationship make things stronger? Not many, and Rod knew that too. Their relationship was forged into something stronger than it was before and they got married not long after that.

This leads me to why I'm writing this blog in the first place. Their music. While they maintain their music individually, they also started a new venture they call "Mac Williams". Whether they are at Uncle Billy's on Lake Travis or entertaining the crowds at Ski Shores on Lake Austin, Mac Williams has a chemistry that jumps out at you like Bubba at Victoria's Secret! They have a genuine passion for making great music and delivering it to their audience in a way that leaves people wanting more.

Love. At The Cantina on 6th St.

I spent some time with them backstage after their performance at "Love. At The Cantina". This is a great music event hosted by my friend and artist, Ginger Leigh on Thursday nights (through the end of February at least) at the Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street in Austin, Texas. Ginger brings in a few different artists every week and they have a song swap session. They share stories in between songs, give the audience some background on themselves and take turns singing their favorite songs. It's a great night out, awesome music and I would encourage you to head out on a Thursday night and check it out. You'll be supporting local music and who knows, maybe we'll swap out Taco Tuesday's for Thirsty Thursday's for a while!

On a personal note, Rod & Shelley, thank you for your neverending support and for believing in me long before I was on tv. You encouraged me, lifted me up and even though you didn't know it, you helped get me through some really hard days for me when I was missing my kids. I love you both.

Thank you all for checking out my latest blog, for your support and like I always say, LET'S GET FAMOUS!!
